The artist was searching for a combination of images which resonated in an unexpected way. He was drawn to the delirious smiles of the dancers and felt that they would work well if displaced from their context and set in an odd environment.
The fact that the dancers are young and jumping over a bush made him think of regeneration, hence the title 'Spring Rites'. The painting featured in the 2018 London Contemporary Art Prize exhibition where it was
shortlisted for the award.
