‘Communion 2’ is one of a series paintings whose theme is 'transcendence mired in the carnal'. The priest-like figure launching in to the sky is partly composed of a tangle of bones and antlers which are intended to have two interpretations. Firstly they symbolise animal instinct, replacing as they do the head of the priest.
Secondly the bones/antlers represent pagan beliefs and by extension the irrational and superstitious foundation of all religions.
The blood points to a literal interpretation of the Eucharist.
