Ioana Baltan

Ioana Baltan (b. 1993) is an energetic full-time visual artist whose oeuvre revolves around mental disabilities, poverty, and homelessness.

She completed a Master in Contemporary Techniques in Painting cum laude at the National University of Arts in Bucharest (Romania) in 2017 and a scholarship at Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan.

After experiencing the artistic vibrancy of the Beaconsfield Contemporary Art in London, where she worked, she decided to leave her family and her Romanian home country and elect the English capital as her home in 2018.

With a genuine desire to achieve a deeper understanding of artistic craftsmanship, over the last five years, Ioana has mastered large-scale paintings where she delves into a figurative expression of ideas related to mental health, dreams, and myths.

Ioana would engage with homeless people to gauge their daily hardships and then painterly translate them.

Also, after experiencing a traumatic psychotic event within her own family, she decided to deepen her knowledge on the topic and seek permission to visit Obregia Mental Illness Institute in Bucharest to experience and represent first-hand what she saw.

Currently, the artist is enriching her understanding of the human psyche, creating works inspired by dreams, hypnotic trance, and stories regarding our human origins, in which she mixes elements from her own life as a young ex-pat woman.

Ioana Baltan

A zestful and committed artist, her technique combines oil painting with new pigments (neon, gold, and shimmer tones), collages, and spray paint on linen or canvas support.

Aesthetically, her art combines classic elements with strong brush strokes, gradients, lines, transparencies, and patterns.
