Paul Gravett: A Journey Through Abstract Photography

Introduction

Paul Gravett’s artistic evolution offers an inspiring testament to a lifelong dedication to creativity. With roots that traverse diverse creative outlets—including music, textiles, and culinary arts—his path eventually converged with the camera, leading to a flourishing practice in abstract photography. Drawing inspiration from the bold abstraction of Rothko and Newman, Gravett has developed a distinct visual language that blends depth, dimension, and transformation. His work invites viewers to reconsider photography’s place within contemporary abstract art, while his approach underscores the unending exploration that defines his practice.

Explore the mind behind Paul Gravett’s abstract photography as he shares his influences, his creative process, and his aspirations.

Early Explorations in Creativity

“Creativity has been a constant thread throughout my life, starting from my youth,” Gravett reflects. His early fascinations spanned disciplines, from playing piano and weaving to cheese making and photography. Even in professional roles as an arts manager and consultant, this commitment to creativity remained central.

Although initially introduced to photography by his father, who had cameras and a darkroom, Gravett returned to the medium later in life with a deep desire to carve out a unique voice. “I wanted to avoid replicating the work of others; instead, I aimed to create something that felt authentic to me,” he explains. Searching for a space where art and photography intersected, he began reinventing his creative practice.

Mark Rothko (1903-1970)

The Rothko and Newman Influence

While abstraction came naturally to Gravett, he credits formative encounters with iconic artworks for shaping his path. “Seeing Newman’s Voice of Fire at the National Gallery in Ottawa was unforgettable. Its sheer scale and simplicity shocked me,” he recalls. Similarly, experiencing Rothko’s paintings at the Tate Modern left an equally indelible impression.

These influences are present in Gravett’s photography, though never directly imitated. “Some of my work intentionally references artists like Rothko and Barnett Newman,” Gravett says. “But my goal is reinterpreting their ideas through abstract photography, not mimicking them.” His homage lies in the bold use of colour and abstraction, filtered through the conceptual lens of his camera.

From Concept to Completion

Gravett’s creative process embodies unpredictability and discovery. Inspired by unexpected moments—even the interplay of shapes glimpsed while scrolling Instagram—his work begins as an exploration of relationships and forms. “A simple alignment between two shapes can act as the catalyst for a deeper creative process,” he notes.

The process involves layering small pieces of paper and transparencies, stacked strategically using spacers to create depth. Working with a macro lens, Gravett photographs from above, focusing on different planes to accentuate variations in depth of field. This meticulous approach captures an initial sense of dimension.

The transformation takes place digitally. “Once I’ve captured my images, I digitally ‘develop’ them in Photoshop, layering six original photographs together,” Gravett explains. “Significantly, I never add or subtract elements during this phase; everything stems from the raw photographs. Yet the final results often diverge drastically from the originals, becoming entirely new creations.”

Surmounting Creative Challenges

Even creativity is not immune to blocks. Gravett views these moments as necessary pauses. “I believe ideas often percolate in the background, forming connections that take time to materialise,” he says. Beyond traditional methods, Gravett finds inspiration not only in art forms but also in the everyday, approaching life with curiosity and openness to discovery.

Abstract Photography with Depth

Describing his artistic style, Gravett remarks, “My work is abstract yet vibrant, centred on depth and dimension that defy conventional expectations of photography. It transforms familiar elements into unfamiliar expressions.” This constant push against boundaries situates Gravett’s photography firmly within the vocabulary of contemporary abstract art.

Invitation to Curiosity

Unlike art rooted in thematic narratives, Gravett’s photography functions as an open-ended conversation. “I don’t approach my work with specific themes or messages,” he shares. “Instead, I aim to provoke curiosity, encouraging viewers to question photography’s evolving role in abstract art. Through rhythm and balance in shapes and colours, my images are designed to invite deeper reflection.”

The Evolution of Technique

Gravett’s practice is built upon constant reinvention. “My work evolves gradually, often in ways that are subtle to others but striking to me,” he explains. Experimentation drives this evolution, ensuring his body of work remains fresh while staying grounded in foundational techniques honed over years.

Insights for Aspiring Artists

For those beginning their artistic journey, Gravett offers profound advice. “Focus on what you genuinely love doing and allow that to guide your creative process,” he says. This pursuit of authenticity, he believes, unlocks both personal growth and originality in art.

He also underscores the role of experimentation. “You can’t discover your voice without trial and error. Allow yourself the freedom to explore and fail—that’s where innovation happens.”

Looking Ahead

Gravett’s artistic future is poised for transformation. “Although abstract photography forms the core of my practice, I feel increasingly drawn to new approaches that could push my work into entirely different territories,” he remarks. While the specifics remain unclear, the possibilities ahead fuel his enthusiasm for what’s to come.
