Robert Sherwin

I moved to New York in 1979 and witnessed the slow revitalization of a great city. A thriving art scene had begun to flourish in the East Village and, where a jumble of cold water flats once stood on the lower westside, now there were only empty lots, awash in light and color, in stark contrast to the dark canyons of the city. For nearly a decade, I photographed industrial relics of New York City: crumbling highways, vacant warehouses, aging power plants, etc. Interested in color and form, my preferred time of day to shoot was dusk, before the night sky had descended. In 2015, my work shifted toward natural landscapes with a focus on hills, microscapes and abstracts.

In 1981, my work was exhibited at the Floating Foundation of Photography in Tribeca, New York City, alongside Duane Michals and color pioneer Pete Turner. I subsequently showed at Semaphore Gallery in the East Village, and was represented by M-13 in Soho. My urban images are in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, Museum of the City of New York and the Nassau County Museum of Art. Recent exhibitions include the Fairfield Museum and Marblehead Art Society.
