These black-and-white photographs comprise a limited edition series exploring optical montage, referencing László Moholy-Nagy’s Light Modulator experiments. The camera’s subject is Bowman’s own refraction system, composed of multiple planes of clear perspex that bend and disperse projected film and animation within the frame. Static and moving imagery converge across layered surfaces and refracted light to produce unrepeatable moments, akin to a physical form of multi-frame compositing in which discrete optical events accumulate into a single image.
For Bowman, each photograph brings together light, material, and time in a spatiotemporal composition, where the material and the ephemeral merge into a singular field of abstraction.
